When we build custom log cabins we think about quality and comfort first. The spacious log cabins we build today are likely to include skylights, saunas and other luxury stuff. However, for homesteaders settling the West, log cabins fulfilled more basic needs. Wherever timber was readily available, a log house could be built in just a several days using only a few simple tools, some times just an axe and no nails were needed. Those early log cabins were sturdy, rainproof, and inexpensive.
